Your 5-Star status is determined based on the number of qualifying products at the time you apply for the loan. You are not able to increase it at the time of application. Note that inactive checking accounts and credit cards will be closed and will reduce your 5-Star status.

The Base Loan Rate is the rate for a member with tier 1 credit (700 & above) and no 5-Star discounts. Rates increase based on lower credit scores and decrease based on 5-Star discounts.

Credit unions, banks and other finance companies who make loans with cars as collateral, typically have a maximum $500 deductible. The main reason for this is that until the car loan is paid off, the car is technically owned by the lender. Many times when borrowers have $1,000 deductibles or higher, when there is damage to the vehicle, they choose not to fix it because they don't have the $1,000 or don't want to pay that much out of their pocket. There have been many studies done on this and it is a very common practice. When this is done, the value of the car, which is collateral for the loan, goes down. In addition, if not fixed, the car may eventually become something the borrower doesn't want to keep or may become undriveable. If the car is voluntarily surrendered to the lender or if the lender has to repossess the vehicle, it is likely the lender will lose money when trying to sell it. When this happens, the borrower is responsible for the remaining balance after the sale but many times they do not pay it, leaving the lender to pass along those costs to the rest of their borrowers with higher rates, fees, etc.
